Don’t break my heart!

Since my last post I’ve been making every attempt at hitting up the gym more fre
quently. Not nearly as much as I would like to, but I’ve gotten into a routine, which is nice. Classes in the evenings consist of Deeper Power (a Monday night aqua class) and Aquacize (a Tuesday/Thursday night aqua class).
My morning routine of 5am workouts kind of let up for a few weeks and I was going to go back this morning, but woke up around 2:30 sick, but now I’m perfectly fine. So I’ll restart the 5am routine, tomorrow.


I’ll take a water, please.

I already like to drink infused waters, but I found some more simple, quick recipes that I’d waterlike to try and I figured I would share them with you.

  • Cucumbers, strawberries, basil – helps to boost immune system
  • Cucumbers, strawberries, lemon, orange – helps boost energy (NO SUGARY DRINKS!)
  • Apples, cinnamon sticks – removes heavy metals from system (trust me, there’s more than you know!)
  • Lemon, raspberries – helps reduce inflammation (huge plus for endo warriors like me and bloaters)
  • Green apples, cucumbers, mint – helps kick start weight loss
  • Cucumbers, strawberries, lime, mint – help reduce stress (dear stress, let’s break up!)
  • Cucumbers, lime, lemon, grapefruit, mint – helps to lower blood pressure
  • Pear, ginger – not sure what it does, but it’s one of my favorite

Because nearly all of these drinks call for cucumbers – it looks like I will be planting a garden this year so I have an endless supply. What do you like in your water? Pick one of the flavors from the image above, drop into your water, leave overnight and enjoy!


Dieting?

What types of diets have you used? Were they successful? Why/why not? I have seriously done an array of things, from Weight Watchers Point System to Sensa Shakers. I had the best success with Sensa. I lost 30lbs in 2 months and never continued with it; however, it looks like they were sued and ended up closing their doors (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensa_(diet)). Hm, I was never contacted about receiving a settlement from them per the FTC  – https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/cases-proceedings/refunds/sensa-refunds.  That’s always fun!

So my typical day starts out with Starbucks and I’m curtailing that to maybe once a week starting this week because my nutritionist told me I had to and because I’m tired of drinking my calories. I plan on starting my day with a good, nutritious, protein packed meal. I hardly ever have lunch at work mainly because I don’t go anywhere, and eating at your desk is honestly the worst. My dinners need to be more protein and veggies. There’s really no question about it. No more late night dinners. It’s just unsettling.


New friends!

Making friends has always been one of the most difficult things for me. It seems like the older I get the less and less friends are actually around. Maybe that’s because they’re too far away or because they have kids and I don’t. So, I’ve taken to other methods of trying to make friends. After all, we’re meant to be social creatures. I have connected with a few ladies lately that seem to be on the same level as I am, which is always great because having other people going through the same struggles as you are is comforting in a sense, but also good to know there’s someone you can turn to.


Workout DVDs

I have a few workout DVDs and there’s always YouTube and iPhone apps nowadays that are easily accessible. The DVDs I have include Beachbody Cize and Country Heat. I haven’t done Country Heat yet mainly because, well, there is no reason – I keep making excuses as to why. I just need to hook up my TV in the basement and throw a DVD player on it. No one is going to do it for me! You’re welcome to join.I might do Country Heat as a precursor to my gym activity in the morning or alternating days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). We shall see what pans out, but the excuses have run out. Today is the day.


Special Quoting

One of my high school English teachers, who coincidentally was also my elementary school principle, Kevin Davenport, is infamous for instilling “Carpe Diem on us. It’s so true. Seize the day. I can. I will. A quote that I had hanging in my locker from one of my aunt Betty’s friends was, “I’ll go in for an A, but I’ll settle for a B.” Not today, Lee. Not today. Today and for the rest of my days,  I am an A. Settling just isn’t for me anymore. I’ve always just settled, be it in sports, academics, and always my appearance. The next time you look in the mirror, remember that the person staring back at you is your ONLY competition.

Don’t quit. DO IT!
Never give up. Give it 100%.
Do it now! Sometimes ‘later’ becomes ‘never.’
Practice like you’ve never won. Perform like you’ve never lost.

Hello 2017. Hello new me!

Welcome to 2017. I know I haven’t written again in awhile, but this time – I am going to start up again and at least post 2 times a week. So be on the look out.

Recap 2016 since last post:

  1. Tuesday, November 8, the world crashed around Keith and I. No, not because Donald Trump won the 45th presidential election, but our dear, sweet Lucy’s time on earth came to a screeching halt. I had come home from work and went to scoop her litter box, went into the bathroom to wash my hands and came back to her laying in pee and diarrhea next to the box. I cleaned it and her up. She ate and rank. I picked her up and put her on our bed. Texted Keith and told him to hurry home.
    I believe she waited for us to be with her. Keith called the vet and they advised us to bring her in around 7. Shortly thereafter, they called us back to tell us to bring her in now. We took her to the office. Our littlest fur baby crossed over the rainbow bridge at 6:10pm and we were by her side the entire time. It was quick and painless for her, but for me – those few seconds lasted an eternity.
    The following week I picked up her ashes and her paw impression. It has been two months since we lost her and it has not gotten much easier. We still miss her and talk about her all the time. Her picture hangs on our fridge. Her ashes are in our dining room. I “pet” the box daily and kiss the little impression of her paw.
  2. Went hunting for the first time in 5 years with my dad and brother on the first day of PA deer season! I am hoping to do some more hunting this year, too. Turkey and such.
  3. I turned 30. This is an accomplishment. I used to think 30 was old! Now I know why.. I feel old.
  4. On December 6, I decided to give up walking. I was leaving work today and I face planted down two, possibly three, stairs and went face first into a door handle. I had a slightly sore left ankle, terribly brush burned and bruised right knee,and massive lower back pain. I went to a workmen’s comp doctor to get that all sorted out. Went for x-rays – no broken bones, no fractures. Knee and ankle are 100%, but my back still occasionally bugs me. I’ve been cleared by the WC doctor to go about my business.
  5. Rogue One and Fantastic Beasts… go. Now. Run if you have to, but go.
  6. Keith got me a beautiful necklace from Zales for Christmas. It’s a kitty wrapped around a heart – it symbolizes Lucy. He gave it to me from Blizzard and Oreo, but obviously it’s from him.
  7. I helped pass out Bags of Cheer to the less fortunate the weeks of New Years at one of the churches in my district (First UMC of Lancaster). The bags had socks, tissues, candy, hygiene items, crackers, etc. This made my heart happy. Especially every single time their eyes lit up.
  8. Celebrated New Year’s Eve at the Hershey Bears hockey game and was in bed by 9:45pm.

So what’s good for 2017?

  • Getting my butt in a routine of pure imagination – WHAT?
    • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 0500 = cardio gym time (treadmill, elliptical, ski machine) we’ll take it slow at first
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays are devoted to class with Ashley and anyone else who wants to join, provided that I do not work in the evening. One of these days will also be a “rest day” considering that at least one of these classes will be in the pool so it’s not really a workout, but it is.
    • Saturday and/or Sunday are being devoted to pickleball! I need my pickleball back.
  • Foodie time! Mmmm.. yes.
    • Cutting out the daily morning binge to Starbucks sounds like a good start, it’s only a small addiction.
    • Portion control is key. I can. I will. So far, I must say I am semi-happy with the decisions I’ve made. This will come with time and I will not discourage myself.
    • From this day forward, I vow to leave the candy behind. Good-bye my love. I’ll miss you Jelly Belly Jelly Beans – no one can ever just have the suggested serving size so I’ve decided I have to break-up with you.
  • Follow the yellow brick road to – VACATION!
    • We need to take an honest to goodness vacation this year, maybe somewhere we’ve already been, maybe somewhere different. I’m open to suggestions.
  • Home improvements *happy dance*
    • Outdoors
      • Installation of two outdoor outlets – front of house so I can actually trim bushes / back of house for weed whacking purposes and my hot tub time machine – what? You don’t have one? Better get on that. It’s the next best thing.
      • Cut down gigantic trees and hopefully rectify box elder bug issue
      • Fix up shed doors, install pull down stairs so we can get to the loft, and possibly install a window
      • Build fire pit once gigantic trees are gone
      • Build table from gigantic tree trunks
    • Bathroom
      • Paint – I was supposed to do this over my Christmas break, but because of my back injury from above,  I didn’t want to be climbing up and down the ladder.
      • Fix drain issue – easy, but haven’t had the time to do it
    • Bedroom Number 3
      • Re-organize and turn it into a better, more functioning office.
      • Possibly new workstation
      • Shelving/storage
    • Basement
      • Frame out two walls and hang insulation and drywall
      • Paint
      • Lay flooring
      • Build the bar – DRINK ‘EM if ya got ’em!

In a nutshell, 2017 seems like it should a great year! I am super excited about what it has in store for me and for us. I feel that 2017 is MY/OUR year. I have been at my job now for seven months (6/1/16) and I absolutely LOVE it! How many people can actually say that they love all aspects of their job? I loved my job at the courthouse, but nothing compares to this. This job is rewarding and I am using my college education on a daily basis. People are super friendly. I get to make decisions on my own. I have my own office. I travel. All while serving God. What can possibly be better?

Alright, well. Keep check back here for some more adventures and posts about my progress. I have an ultimate goal of loosing 160 pounds. I’m still not prepared to tell y’all where that would put me, but it’s a goal. In the meantime, while working toward that overall goal, I have set mini goals.

2017 Personal Goals

  1. Lose 10 lbs by end of January
  2. Lose 20 lbs by end of February
  3. Lose 50 lbs by end of July
  4. Lose 80 lbs by end of the year (HALF WAY to GOAL)
  5. Jog a 5k

I think those are some pretty obtainable goals. And I know that will persistence and continued support, I can make it happen. Don’t give up on yourself. You can do it, too! Let’s rock 2017 and then look the BEST for 2018! We can. We will!

Lucy Update

Dr. Doman at Neffsville Veterinary Clinic called this morning to update us on the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing that was sent out on Lucy. It came back positive; however, since there is no testing for FIP (until postmortem) this tested for strains of the coronavirus, which she definitely has.

I told him how she’s still acting like a normal cat, sans playing. He seemed shocked at that, but is confident she’ll let us know when it’s time. He told us to keep monitoring her like we’ve been doing, keep with the wet food, continue to change her water daily and constant litter scooping, and most of all, just to love her.

This is a tough battle we’re dealing with, but she’s already proven to be a fighter. Most cases of effusive FIP (wet), cats don’t live longer than a few days. Lucy is on day 10 since the ER trip; but day 13 since we noticed her bloated belly.

I recently joined an FIP support group on Facebook where I’ve learned more info and I continue to do my research. Keith and I have discussed what we’re going to do after Lucy’s battle. We’ve decided that we won’t replace her.

I’m going to make salt dough later tonight and make a few impressions of her paws. We do know we are planning on having her cremated (I don’t want to bury her because there are too many animals roaming around our yard). So we’ve begun looking at urns for the house and a necklace with some of her ashes in for me.

It’s truly a difficult task watching a loved one’s health decline. It doesn’t matter if it’s a human or a pet. Lucy has made an impact on our lives in the short 7 weeks we’ve had her. We will continue to give her the life she deserved in the time we have with her.

I know – I know. I’ve let you down my faithful readers. May was my last post. A lot of things have happened since then. Well let’s see..

  • Adopted Lucy (a now 6 month old Russian Blue kitten)
  • Blizzard (our buff cat) was sisck for a few days
  • Went on vacation – Antietam & Harper’s Ferry

October

  • Went to Adjourned Session for my full-time job and learned we will reduce our number of district offices from 6 to 4 (I’m safe)
  • Went back to a nutritionist (different one, where my insurance actually pays for it this time – I just pay co-pay) – it was an initial visit so we didn’t get into anything yet, I’ll see her on the 25th again to really dig in
  • Learned Lucy has an incurable virus that is fatal (FIP) – BUT we are getting a second opinion – because I refuse to believe it’s final

What is FIP

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of a virus called the feline coronavirus. Most strains of feline coronavirus are avirulent, which means that they do not cause disease, and are referred to as feline enteric coronavirus.

Cats that have been initially exposed to the feline coronavirus usually show no obvious symptoms. Some cats may show mild upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge. Other cats may experience a mild intestinal disease and show symptoms such as diarrhea. Only a small percentage of cats that are exposed to the feline coronavirus develop FIP-and this can occur weeks, months, or even years after initial exposure.

In cats that develop FIP, the symptoms can appear to be sudden since cats have an amazing ability to mask disease until they are in a crisis state. Once symptoms develop, often there is increasing severity over the course of several weeks, ending in death. Generally, these cats first develop nonspecific symptoms such as loss of appetite, weight loss, depression, rough hair coat, and fever.

There are two major forms of FIP, an effusive, or “wet” form, and a noneffusive, or “dry” form. Generally, cats will exhibit the signs of the noneffusive form FIP more slowly than the effusive form. Symptoms generally include chronic weight loss, depression, anemia, and a persistent fever that does not respond to antibiotic therapy.

The effusive form of FIP is characterized by an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen, or less commonly in the chest. Early in the disease, the cat may exhibit similar symptoms to the dry form, including weight loss, fever, loss of appetite, and lethargy. The wet form of the disease often progresses rapidly, and the cat may quickly appear pot-bellied due to fluid accumulation in the abdomen. When the fluid accumulation becomes excessive, it may become difficult for the cat to breathe normally.

FIP can be difficult to diagnose because each cat can display different symptoms that are similar to those of many other diseases.  (courtesy: Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine).

Lucy’s diagnosis was wet or effusive FIP because her abdominal section was fluid-filled. However, there really hasn’t been any other symptoms. We decided to take her for a second opinion tomorrow night at our old vet’s office. We had to stop going to them because they become much too expensive, but now we need them again because they have an Internal Medicine Specialist on staff and our current vet doesn’t. Because of the increase in costs, we’ve decided to start a GoFundMe page to help us offset the costs. Thankfully, we have the Care Credit credit card to pay everything up front, but obviously that is even limited. So any little bit will help. Proceeds will go right to paying off those expenses as they come in. Right now we have incurred about $350 because of her ER visit on Saturday afternoon. There’s already a previous balance on there from Blizzard’s three visits when she was sick in September (initial vet visit, ER visit, and follow up), which accumulated to approximately $590. So things may become tough.

April Showers bring May Flowers…

Yikes!!! Completely didn’t realize that I didn’t write for the entire month of April. What else is new? So what has been happening here… so I was seeing a nutritionist and a few weeks ago I was supposed to have a follow up with the doctor and I cancelled it because something came up and I didn’t reschedule. I need to get back on that, but things really haven’t been working out well. I’m also completely “eh” about it. I was doing well and then got back in to the rut of my old ways. That needs to stop now!

So as you know, I am still in college. I’m actually in my very last term (6 more weeks to go – done June 18); however, Friday night was my college graduation!! Wooohoooo!!! That was a shit-show though. Graduates had to be there by 6pm in Harrisburg at The Forum. Are you nuts? Yeah, well, we had to driver around for awhile and Keith had to drop me off at the doors and then go find parking. It was insane! Not only that, considering that I’m an online student, I had no clue who ANYONE was. Made small talk with another girl who was an online student. Little did we know that we could donate $20.61 to the educational foundation to get maroon and white cords. THANKS FOR TELLING US CPU! Totally not cool. Not really thrilled about that, but whatever. I might write to them to find out if I can donate it now and maybe they can mail them to me or something. Take some pictures again once I actually complete the courses I’m taking this term. This time getting pictures with Keith. That’d be nice. There was no where to take pictures because it was crappy weather and the building was a little too full. It was like packing sardines into a can while they’re still moving.

So, Keith took some pictures of me at graduation that I am terrified to post because it was while I was sitting. Robes and caps were black. I look hideous. I don’t think I realized how bad it was, but starting Tuesday (I have homework to do tonight and a dentist appointment tomorrow) I will be going to the gym following the below schedule:

  • Music Monday — cardio/dance
  • Training Tuesday — elliptical/treadmill/bike
  • Weights Wednesday — chest/legs/back/arms (this will start after June when choir is over)
  • Team play Thursday — Pickleball
  • Feet up Friday — off day
  • Scoring Saturday — pickleball
  • Strengthening Sunday — more weights

Anyone is welcome to join me. I will be at the Lititz recCenter (at least until we decide if we want to continue our membership) typically just after 5:30pm. Monday nights might be at my house. I really enjoy some YouTube videos I found from Bipasha Basu. She’s pretty fantastic when it comes down to it.

Workout while I still can

So on March 17, the Lititz recCenter sent out an email to all customers who participate with Healthways Prime program (through our health insurance) that they would not be renewing their contract with Healthways and the last day will be June 30, 2016. They aren’t offering any specials or discounts to those who are affected. They basically told Keith, “here’s the price everyone else pays, that’s what you’ll pay.” Sorry, but no. We can’t do it. We pay a set fee to Prime ($50 per month) to use your gym. We can’t afford to have at huge inflation like what you charge other folks. So, with that said, effective June 30, I have no GYM. And most importantly, I have no PICKLEBALL.  

The Lititz recCenter can now piss off! I guess I’ll have to go back to Planet Fitness for $10/month, even though I hated it there. I may look into Curves, too. They still accept Prime.

Not all hope is lost for pickleball. We can play outside in the warmer months and go to Overlook skate rink on evenings ($5 every time we go or we can get a punch card for $25). Any takers on joining us outdoors!? I’d love to play with y’all!

Don’t! Just don’t do it! I’m there making myself into a better, healthier person. At least I’m better than the person sitting on their couch doing nothing.

He’s Risen

Happy Easter from me to you and your families. 

Today Keith and I hosted Easter dinner which consisted of a total of 10 people here in our new home. Our dinner included:

  • Deviled and pickled eggs
  • Fruit salad
  • Caramel spiced applesauce
  • Apple smoked ham with clove and pineapple
  • Mashed white potatoes
  • Glazed sweet potatoes
  • Broccoli and cauliflower gratin 
  • Baked corn
  • Baked pineapple
  • Dinner rolls
  • Banana bread
  • Apple pie
  • Lemon sponge pie
  • Yum yum dessert (vanilla pudding, Ritz crackers, vanilla ice cream, cool whip)
  • Peanut butter and cream eggs

   
It was an enjoyable day. Even the cats are exhausted. We took a nap after everyone left. Still exhausted. Now we can relax for awhile. We have nothing coming up any time soon. 

We plan on having a housewarming still, just not sure when. Well, hoping you all had an enjoyable day!
